Who is Stonebwoy in Ghana?

Born Livingstone Etse Satekla, Stonebwoy Burniton is a Ghanaian afro pop & reggae-dancehall artiste, songwriter, and entrepreneur.

He is the founder and President of BHIM (Bless His Imperial Majesty) Nation” with a huge loyal fanbase, and Burninton Music Group (BMG) record label.

In 2015, Stonebwoy became the second Ghanaian artiste after Sarkodie to win the 2015 BET Award for Best International Act: Africa.

In that same year (2015), the Baafira hitmaker won the coveted “Artiste Of The Year” award at the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

In 2017, Stonebwoy aka 1GAD was once again nominated in the 2017 BET Awards for Best International Act: Africa category.

The 60th GRAMMY Awards (2017) Recording Academy recognized Stonebwoy’s contribution as a featured artiste on Morgan Heritage’s Grammy award-nominated song, “Avrakedabra” in the Best Reggae Album category.

Stonebwoy is also a proud recipient of two billboard plaques for his musical works.

In 2019, he was named as one of the successful 50 (fifty) young CEOs by YCEO and Avance media.

Based on his music exploits in Africa and the world at large over the years, some people have described Stonebwoy as the king of all reggae and dancehall artists in Africa.

Livingstone Etse Satekl is not only a musician, but also an actor who has made appearances in the movies: Happy Death Day, and My name is Ramadan.

Date Of Birth

The “Putuu” hitmaker, Stonebwoy was born on Saturday, March 5, 1988.

Age

Livingstone Etse Satekl better known as Stonebwoy is currently 35 years of age and will be 36 yeears come next year, 2024.

Parents

Stonebwoy and his late twin brother were born to the late Catherine Lucy Aku Ametepe Satekla in Ashaiman — a suburb of Accra, Ghana.

He is the fourth (4th) born of seven (7) siblings of his parents.

Hometown

Stonebwoy and his late twin brother come from Alakple-Anloga in the Volta Region of Ghana.

It is sad to announce that at a very young age, Stonebwoy lost his twin brother.

Mother

On July 29th, 2015, Stonebwoy sadly lost his mother, Catherine Lucy Aku Ametepe Satekla at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

Stonebwoy accident that broke his knee

On January 19th, 2003, Stonebwoy got himself badly injured in his right leg after he was involved in a fatal accident on the Accra-Tema Motorway when he and his family were heading towards Ashaiman from Accra. 

On the said day, he was travelling with his dad and elder sister in their private car when a police officer who was driving a police vehicle (car) veered off his road and smashed into Stonebwoy’s father’s car which instantly injured all of them.   

Education

Stonebwoy attended Methodist Day Senior High School for his senior high education with rapper Sarkodie at the same time.

After senior high school, he gained admission to the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) where he earned a degree in Marketing in 2013.

Wife Louisa Ansong

BHIM Nation’s president, Stonebwoy finally tied the knot with Louisa Ansong — a medical doctor who graduated with distinction from the reputable Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

In 2016, Stonebwoy’s wife emerged the Overall Best Student (Dental Surgery) from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), winning 6 out of 9 awards during the school’s graduation ceremony.

Their wedding was successfully held at the Unique Flora at the Trade Fair Centre in Accra.

Children

Stonebwoy and his wife Louisa currently have two kids — one boy, one girl — namely; Catherine Jidula Satekla & L Janam Joachim Satekla.

Music Career

Young Stonebwoy’s love and passion for creative arts showed very early when he was in his fourth (4) year in primary school.

He successfully scripted and acted for his school’s drama club and also created rhythms by putting words together.

He moved on to learn songs of his favourite well-known musicians and later, started writing and composing his own songs.

In his first year in senior high school, Stonebwoy met with radio DJ/Presenter, Doctor Duncan who was then the host of Adom FM’s KASAHARE Level — a live radio rap competition/battle program which unearthed talents like BET award winner Sakordie, Yaa Pono, Dr Cryme, among others.

After a decade of rapping on Kasahare Level, Stonebwoy recalls:

 “I battled my way out every weekend on KASAHARE without defeat till date. Music chose me, I didn’t choose music.”

Stonebwoy recorded his first track in a family studio some years back.

He released his first radio hit, “Makoma (My Heart)” when he was in his second year at senior high school. He followed it up with some other fairly hit songs.

By the time he was in his third year, Stonebwoy had already become popular and was known to many.

He went on to release another hit song titled “Empress” which even soared his popularity after completing his senior high school education in 2007.

From 2008—2012: Grade 1 Album (1st)

In 2008, Stonebwoy started working with renowned Ghanaian music producer, Joseph Appiah aka Quick Action (of S24 studios in Accra) where he (Stonebwoy) was introduced to Samini — one of Ghana’s seasoned reggae-dancehall artistes.

Samini signed Stonebwoy to his record label, Samini Music which would later metamorphose into HighGrade Family.

Whilst under Samini Music (HighGrade Family), Stonebwoy recorded his first hit single, “Climax” which featured Samini, and later, “Ghetto Love” which featured Irene Logan.

The two released songs earned Stonebwoy nominations at the Ghana Music Awards that year.

iPappi Biography

In 2012, Stonebwoy, after getting the needed exposure, formed his own record label, Burninton Music Group (BMG) and released his debut album titled, “Grade 1” on 6th March, 2012, to coincide with Ghana’s 56th Independence Day celebrations.

The 17-track Grade 1 album had features from rapper Tinny, Edem, Samini, Irene Logan, and a host of others.

From 2014–2015: Necessary Evil Album (2nd) & BET Award

In 2014, Stonebwoy released his second album, “Necessary Evil” which had 29 tracks on it including the popular Baafira track which featured Sarkodie.

In 2015, Stonebwoy received many nominations with the Necessary Evil album, and subsequently won the coveted “Artiste Of The Year”, “Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the year”, and “Album of the Year” awards at the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

In that same year (2015), Stonebwoy won the BET Award for Best International Act: Africa.

From 2017: Epistles Of Mama Album (3rd) & Nana Appiah Mensah aka NAM1

On December 12th, 2017, the BHIM Nation boss released his third studio album with the title ‘Epistles of Mama (EOM)’ — an album he dedicated solely to his late mother, Catherine Lucy Aku Ametepe Satekla.

The 24-track Epistles Of Mama (EOM) album featured the likes of Sean Paul, Burna Boy, King Promise, among others.

The Epistles Of Mama (EOM) album peaked at number thirteen (13) on Billboard chart top 200 albums worldwide, and was also in, 2018, rated the second-best album in the world by Reggaeville.

Youtube also honoured the Epistles Of Mama (EOM) album for hitting over 10million views on its platform.

In 2017, Zylofon Music record label owned by embattled Ghanaian businessman, Nana Appiah Mensah aka NAM1 signed Stonebwoy to his label.

2020: Anloga Junction Album (4th) featuring Keri Hilson

On April 24th, 2020, Stonebwoy released his much-anticipated fourth studio album dubbed, ‘Anloga Junction’.

The album had features from the likes of  Keri Hilson (USA), Nasty C (South Africa), Diamond Platinumz (Tanzania), Alicai Harley (Jamaica), Jahmiel (Jamaica), Zlatan (Nigeria), Kojo Antwi (Ghana), Chivv (Netherlands), and Spanker (Netherlands).

Music producers who worked on the “Anloga Juction” album were Mix Master Garzy, Streetbeatz, M.O.G. Beatz, Spanker, Riga, Phantom, Ipaapi, among others.

Stonebwoy vs Shatta Wale Controversy

On Saturday, May 18th, 2019, the two biggest dancehall rivals in Ghana created a mortal-kombat-like scene during the 20th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

It all started when, after Stonebwoy had received his award for “Reggae/Dancehall Artiste Of The Year” from ace presenter Abeiku Santana, his rival Shatta Wale and his die-hard supporters besieged the stage.

Stonebwoy in his reaction pulled what looked like a gun on stage in a bid to protect himself just in case anything untoward happened.

Both Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale were later arrested and detained the following day, and made to appear in court where they pleaded not guilty to their respective charges after which they were granted a bail of GH¢50,000 each.

The organizers of the awards, Charterhouse announced in a press conference that they had stripped the awards the two picked on the night, and were also indefinitely banned from the award scheme.

Stonebwoy has worked tirelessly throughout his music journey to be where he is today.

The international and local artistes he has worked with from Africa, America, Europe, and Jamaica include the likes of Keri Hilson, Morgan Heritage, Jah Vinci, Trey Songz, Gappy Ranks, Randy Valentine, Sakordie, Wayne Wonder, Laza Morgan, Samini, Obrafour, Black Prophet, R2Bees, Patoranking, General Pype Stylogee, Burna Boy, Chris Martin, I Octane, Kranium, and many others.

Notable Performances

Stonebwoy has, over the years, given his fans across the world electrifying and energetic performances.

The founder of BHIM Nation has dished out successful performances in the UK, USA, Australia, Italy, Amsterdam, and many other countries, sharing the same stage with international acts such as Lauryn Hill, Alkaline, Busy Signal, Popcaan, and Morgan Heritage.

In August 2014, he kicked off his world tour in the Euro-zone. He performed in countries such as Germany, Italy, Spain and Austria.

In 2016, his Canada-America tour saw him perform in New York City, Ohio, Philadelphia, and Ontario.

In the same year, he rocked Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sidney all in Australia.

His second Euro tour saw him travel to the Nordic to thrill fans in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden in the last quarter of 2017.

Endorsement Deals

Stonebwoy is a global ambassador for sanitation.

In 2018, he was made the brand ambassador for Samsung.

In September 2019, he signed an endorsement deal with Voltic Natural Mineral Water which could be renewed after two years.

In the same year (2019), he partnered with a multinational beverage company to merchandise ‘Boss Energy Drink’.

He launched his newly established clothing line in Ashaiman in a store called the ‘Bhim Shop’ where he sells branded outfits of his BHIM brand.
